Southern California is close to Mexico, as are people who live in New Mexico, and Arizona, and Texas. There are so many great products there that people in these regions can now, thanks to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), go into Mexico and bring out these great products.
You can set up a great web site that will make you all kinds of money from this type of Mexican art and hand crafts. This is definitely something to consider.
Also, Native American artifacts and crafts are so big now. So if you live in the Southwest, New Mexico, Arizona, North, or South Dakota, or anywhere there are Native Americans, you can go and start making deals with some of the craftspeople. You could set up a dynamite web site to sell these types of regional items that are in demand across the whole country!
Now we live in the middle of nowhere - Kansas, and rural Kansas at that. But when people think of Kansas, many think of the Wizard of Oz. Someone could set up a great site with Wizard of Oz memorabilia.
There are also many Mennonites and Amish people in Kansas. They have all kinds of crafts, and quilts, and other interesting
|
things. You could probably strike a deal with these types of people. Also in Pennsylvania and some of the New England states, there are also Amish people. In Pennsylvania and some of the New England states.
Let’s look at another example. Minnesota is big into winter sports including hunting, fishing, and ice fishing. We’ve done that a couple of times. It’s not that fun because you are sitting out there, below zero, in a little hut the size of an outhouse dropping your line down into the ice that you dug three or four feet deep. But there are people interested in that type of activity.
Minnesota is also noted for its wild honey and wild rice, much of it cultivated, again, by the Native Americans. That could be a great regional item.
The South is rich in so many things. There’s the heritage of our southern states, including of course the very popular memorabilia and collectible items from the Civil War. That’s another thought.
If you’re in New England of course, there is so much rich tradition with the founding of America, the Colonies, and all sorts of interesting things from maple syrup from Vermont to all sorts of unique products.

Publishers on-line and off-line are starving for content. You must get that in your head. We’ve published newsletters for years, and we know that it’s true. We’re always looking for someone who will help us with the editorial content, because it is a big job every month. Some publications are weekly. They are looking for content, and what you want to do is get them to publish what you have. This is how you can get hundreds of magazines or newsletters to publish your news releases and articles!
We’ve discussed in many different manuals and cassettes what an outstanding and powerful reference tool the big Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS) directories are, and now we can now bring those directories to get tremendous publicity for our articles and our news releases.
The way to do it is to find the categories in these directories that make sense for what we are trying to sell, then take all those names and addresses and send them our news releases and articles. It is a way to get thousands, and thousands, and thousands of dollars worth of free publicity for our products,
our services, and our books. If you’ll do this, you will be a amazed at how many publications will use your news releases, use your articles - and the money you can make is tremendous.

You should start thinking about sales from day one. You can first develop the ad and then develop the book. When you’ve had hundreds or even thousands of people already send away for your informational product, thanks to your pre-publication promotion, you gain a strong, incredible incentive to get that project done. The same is true when it comes to advertising.
The time to really be creative with your advertising ideas is when you are first getting started and your enthusiasm is strong. Let that enthusiasm help you sell! Then, fulfill on the project by creating the informational product.
This method has the same advantage as the prepublication offer - it helps to motivate you to get finished. The advertisement development - which is the hard part - is already finished and over with.
Creating a title that’s a headline for your book is a very smart thing to do. A headline implies a benefit. Remember, the only reason people buy informational products is for the benefits they provide. Therefore, if you start thinking about benefits from day one, you can potentially sell much more of your product.

Now I’m going to cover ten steps to discovering or creating a profitable Internet business. These are ten important considerations, and their flip sides are pitfalls if you don’t consider them. This will help you find the right Internet business to go into. Rules are made to be broken - I know - and these are merely observations, because there are no hard, fast rules of course. By following these suggestions, though, I think you greatly multiply your chances of success on the Internet.
1. Build a business-to-business operation.
Some of the most profitable operations out there are selling business-to-business, and the projections for the future are saying that business-to-business sales are going to keep growing
This doesn’t mean you can’t sell to consumers, nor does it mean you shouldn’t sell to consumers. All it means is that, given the choice, if you have a possible business-to-business operation where you can sell to other people in business (sell the picks and shovels to the miners, for example), you will increase your chances for success..
|
In the past we have discussed businesses like Amazon.com and ToysRUs.com and such, which are selling to consumers, but they’re the ones we hear about and talk about the most. They have some great business models, but they’re not the ones making the big profits on the bottom line. The largest profits are being made by people selling to businesses!
Plus, one of the greatest aspects of a business-to-business operation is the fact that you can naturally sell the products and services for a higher price!
2. Is it deliverable over the net?
This is a great way to increase your profits. This way you can save on your storage, your warehouse, your shipping, your production, your labor, all the money in inventory, and it’s becoming increasingly possible to deliver over the Internet.
If you can create your product in the form of an e-zine ...
If You can develop the audio products ...
If you can deliver software...
If you can deliver current information ... your customers are going to come again, and again, and again!
|
Perhaps you can deliver your public-cations by subscription over the Internet. Perhaps you can give access to a site that has current information that people are willing to pay for. These are ways of delivering what you’re selling over the Internet. That increases your likelihood of success, as well. It reduces your headaches. It reduces all your operation problems and, therefore, gives you a larger profit.
The ability to deliver your product via the Internet and over your web site is one of the things that makes the Internet so great when you’re trying to decide what products to sell. It doesn’t by any means hint that you have to have a product that you can deliver over the Internet. People are certainly doing very well selling products that have to be actually delivered physically.
If you have some kind of product that you can deliver via the Internet automatically, though, whether it is software that people can automatically download or if it’s paper and ink products that have been put in a format so that they can be downloaded and just read instantly on a person’s computer, it allows you to basically have no delivery cost.
The person comes to your web site, and if you have a merchant account, they can simply pay by credit card. Then they would instantly be able to receive that information via download.
|
Basically, your web site would be totally self-sufficient. You would promote your web site via advertising, but as far as the product delivery goes, you would just receive information in your e-mail that said you had an order, and that the person already got your product. You don’t have to do anything, except maybe send out an e-mail that thanks them for their purchase, and asks them if they would like to come back to your web site again to see some other information.
Some people making that combination, too. Even if it’s a product they have to deliver physically, some clever marketers are sending their customers some of the information instantly so they can capitalize on that instant gratification. “I’ll send you the electronic version of my book today, although I am mailing you the full set of books and tapes in 48 hours. I wanted to make sure you have something in your hands now to get started with.”
3. Is it focused on a tight market?
If your market is small, the Internet is still a very viable way to sell. This almost works in reverse if your market is small and reachable on the Internet. Then you have a much better chance at succeeding.
In other words, don’t sell books ... sell mystery books! Don’t sell computer software ... sell software for graphic artists! Focus the categories to pinpoint accuracy.
|
4. Is there existing competition?
Undoubtedly, the first thing you will say is, “Oh my, there is too much competition out there!” Well, that’s not exactly always the case. You want competition!
You want to go into a business where there is competition! It proves that there is business out there. If there are companies out there selling the type of products you want to sell, they have just proven the viability of that product and that market.
You can profit from all their mistakes. You can see what they’re doing that works and what they’re doing that does not work. You will see the opportunities they provide by recognizing services that they’re not providing.
In this situation the market has been identified for you by your own competition - and their presence helps you immeasurably.
5. Is there something that your customers want more of? Is it expendable?
If you are going to sell vitamin supplements, you’re going to need to replace them. If you’re selling information, are your customers going to need more detailed information or more current information? If that’s the case, you can lose the money on the first sale. That even makes business advertising and promotion even more viable for
|
you, because if you don’t have to make it on the first sale, you can probably spend the full amount on the first sale, or maybe even a little more, to acquire your customer.
6. Can it be sampled over the Internet?
Sampling is giving people a taste of something. The supermarkets are always offering you some food to try. Over the Internet you may be able to sample out your product!
Can you give them a demo version of the software? Can you let them download the first chapter of your info product to read? How about the Table of Contents so they see how detailed it is, like they were browsing it in the store?
If you can allow them to sample your product over the net, it’s going to add a great deal to your potential success!
7. Do you have a back-end?
Do you have another product to follow-up with? Do you have other items people are going to want? If you offer a low cost manual in the beginning, do you have a full course to offer to customers?
If you offer a sample kit in the beginning, do you have a full sized product on the back-end? If you offer a how-to product on the front-end, can you sell them all the supplies they’re
|
going to need to accomplish this on the back-end? Having a back-end is absolutely critical to the success of your business!
8. Is it easy to explain?
This is one of the most important aspects in marketing! Can you explain the business to people instantly?
One of the reasons Amazon has been so successful in selling is because it’s easy to understand. It’s the world’s largest selection of books, at discount pricing, delivered directly to your door in two or three days. When someone tells you this, you instantly understand the whole concept of the business - and that’s the sort of thing you want to strive for!
9. Is it not an advertising-based business model?
I know advertising is a great source of revenue but, in my opinion, you should not consider your business as a totally advertising-based business. In other words, you must have other sources of revenue than just advertising.
There are some unofficial surveys (unofficial because no one can know for certain) that say as much as 75-85% of all the advertising space available on the Internet is unsold.
Large advertisers are looking for great volumes of traffic, so in your niche you may be
|
able to sell advertising and add to your income.
In planning the ideal business to go into, you should not look for advertising as a sole source of revenue.
I believe that advertising is probably one of the big future models for the Internet, don’t get me wrong - but we’re talking about the mega-sites, like the CNN’s of the world.
Even the CNN.com has another revenue source. They have a TV network, and it is also advertisement - based. If you look at the cable networks, though, they also have a second revenue source, namely subscriber fees from the cable systems. They charge on both ends.
If you can sell a service or your own products on a site, - as well as offer information - and sell advertising, that’s much better.
Let’s be honest. I’m talking about mega-million visitor sites. Those sites are going to have advertising as their model. , you know, advertising is going to be the model. But, as I mentioned earlier, for every millionaire made on the .com businesses there’s going to be millions of hundred, hundred thousand dollaraires. I think we should shoot for that and, if it builds fast enough, then go for that as additional revenue.
|
10. Is the mark-up large enough to make an affiliate program an option?
Affiliate programs are where someone else directs traffic to your site and gets a commission on your sales. Affiliate programs are becoming a necessity more and more.
To be successful with affiliate programs, you can’t give three and five percent commissions. You need to give a larger commission, and to do that you have to have a substantial mark-up.
We learned a long, long time ago that we could make much more money if we got many hundreds of other people to help us sell our products. That’s what an affiliate program is all about!
If you offer people a good profit sharing plan, you can set up an affiliate program on the Internet that will double, triple, or possibly even quadruple your profits!

MAKING BACK-END SALES is the key to increasing your profits by up to 900% or more. Here’s a simple way to use this secret:
(1) Create some great offers for your best customers.
(2) Then, filter these promotions down through the rest of your customer base.
(3) Then, take the best of these promotions and make them an on-going promotion. Here’s how it works:
A) 10 days after you do business with a brand new customer - send them your best-pulling package.
B) Send this follow-up package systematically to these people every ten days automatically.
This is a good system because these people are new customers. They feel good about you (assuming your initial fulfillment package satisfied them to begin with) - and they will do INSTANT REPEAT BUSINESS WITH YOU.
|
We’ve seen this concept of using headlines rather than a lot of the banners that have a lot of text on them and they look more like a small display ad rather than just a teaser classified type ad.
In fact, we’ve seen some people now that don’t use banners - they actually just put a headline right in the middle of all the rest of the text on someone’s Website. This is how to “trick” people into responding to your banner ad! More people buy from you with this simple secret!
Tying that directly in with this headline where you just have a couple of words with a question mark would make people look at an ad, or click on it even more, because it doesn’t look so much like a banner ad where there’s a lot of copy
It doesn’t look so much like an adver-tisement - it looks more like a statement and like something that might pique people’s interest.
If you say the word FREE on your banner ad, it’s going to bring people to your Site. FREE is the one magic word that practically forces people to visit your website and spend more money!
Free is the magic word because people do respond to it - very well. Then when they get to your site, you have to put the emphasis on making the sale - because none of us can get rich if we just give things away free and do nothing else!
|
Here are a few ideas to do it:
(1) Create and develop products and the sales material to sell them. Then let other people sell these products. Just 100 Distributors - who sell $5,000 worth of your products every year ‘ $500,000!
(2) Run small ads in national magazines. Run these ads consistently. Just a few of these ads could bring in small amounts of steady profits that could really add up.
(3) Or go BIG TIME. Develop a major marketing campaign and let other people do all the fulfillment and customer service work for you. All you do is sit back and deposit the money!
These three methods can be developed so all you have to do is sit back and spend a couple hours a day overseeing the operation.

These are the kinds of ideas you need to come up with and use. This is not an all inclusive list, and you should always try to come up with your own.
This is merely a sample list, merely a “starter’s block” for you to start with and gain some idea of what will make you profitable. These are the kinds of ideas which many direct-response marketers use to grab the attention of their prospects and make thousands of dollars.
If you learn how to correctly incorporate these ideas to develop your own product ideas and your own ad copy, and you are advertising to the correct market, you stand a very good chance of finding the same kind of success yourself.

Now we’re going to cover specialty services and actually give a success story that we think is fascinating. It’s called “How a little known greeting card company in Boulder, Colorado turned a simple free service into $780,000,000.00.”
This is a fantastic success story. These two people, Susan and Steven Shutz, who back in the early 70's founded a company called Blue Mountain Arts. They created poetry, they created cards, and they wanted to be something a little bit different. They wanted to promote a different kind of cards - not like Hallmark or some of these other large companies - just something a little bit different, so they could carve out their own little tiny niche and focus on that niche.
That’s what they did for a long time. They just kept focusing on their little tiny niche. And certainly they weren’t becoming a multi- million or multi-billion dollar company along those lines.
It is very difficult, as anybody in the greeting card business knows, to really wrestle
|
with the big companies like Hallmark and Carlton Cards. But they kept plugging along.
The Internet was an absolute boom for these two people. They were able to get out onto the Internet and, like we have talked about before, the Internet is the great equalizer.
Previously they weren’t able to compete with the Hallmarks and the Carlton Cards. Now with the Internet they were able to. And they set up a website for their cards, www.bluemountain.com. Instead of charging for their cards, they had free electronic cards.
They still sold all their products - they still sold their print cards, and their poetry books - but on the Internet you could go to their web site and you could design a card or take one of their cards out of their selection, and they had a card for virtually every occasion. You could have it sent to anybody on the Internet. This service grew incredibly.
When someone would get a card, and they would find out that it came from Blue Mountain, they wanted to send cards to all their friends and family, and everybody that got those cards wanted to send cards to their friends and families - and after a while their hits were enormous. In fact, recent numbers say that Blue Mountain cards gets 9.2 million visitors every single month. And in fact, they have consistently been listed in the top 15 web sites in terms of traffic.
|
In a recent list we saw they were number three! Only after Amazon and eBay on the Internet. And what are they doing? They are offering something free. And it’s been a real boom for them because they’ve recently had an offer from a large web site, excite@home, which is a popular Internet portal and web site. These two people who started back in 1971 with a little dinky greeting card company sold their company for $780,000,000.00.
That’s eleven million shares of stock worth $430,000,000.00 and an additional $350,000,000.00 in cold hard cash.
Now you can see the power of the Internet, especially in regards to specialty services. Remember, if the Internet wouldn’t have come along, these people would still be in Boulder, Colorado, with their little niche company. Having a great time!
They loved what they did, but they certainly weren’t making millions, and millions, and millions of dollars. But because of the Internet, they were able to become one of the biggest and most widely trafficked web sites on the Internet - and recently pocketed a couple hundred million dollars for all their work, and loving what they did. So, you really can get rich with specialty services on the Internet.
One of the reasons why we brought this success story up is if you go out there and find
|
a success story on the Internet, one of the best ways to get started yourself isn’t to copy exactly what they’re doing but to model their success formula.
You might have a different type of a service that you could fit into the mold that they used and have a company that can either a) pull in a lot of money for you or b) maybe in a couple of months or a couple of years, you sell out for maybe a couple million dollars in stock and a couple million dollars in cash. We wouldn’t argue with that.
That’s really what we wanted to share with you. It’s a great success story and these are happening all the time. If you model what these people are doing, maybe this could happen to you too!
|
There are a lot - a whole lot - of companies on the Internet giving away free Web pages.
Now, they’ll call them Sites, they’ll call them lots of things. They’ll say they’re free, and some of them will charge you once you dig a little deeper.
But there are truly some Internet companies that are giving away free Websites! An example is GeoCities, and there are a lot of others. Even some Internet service providers that you get your Internet access through, like America Online, will give you a small amount of space to put whatever you want up there.
The thing that we would recommend for people to do is, take advantage of all that free space you can get, the stuff that is truly free.
Use it as basically “teaser copy.” Put a small, one-page, display type ad up that gets people’s attention, tells them a little bit about your product, and then gives them a link to your main Site that is your full Site that sells your product. This is how to get FREE websites that will stampede herds of hot prospects to your website!
|
One of the things that is nice about places like GeoCities, and other Sites like that, is that they also have member directories. That’s where someone who is interested, in for example a business opportunity, enters that key word and they can pull up a list of all the members’ Sites that are related to that. So, basically, you become a part of a directory that people can automatically pull up and then they look for certain subject matters.
The more of these you can get on, the more people you can drive to your Site. That’s one of the things that we think a lot of people can do that they don’t do now. They think that these free Sites are cheap, they don’t give you much. But if you use them and take advantage of them as just an introduction to your Website and as a free display ad, so to speak, that draws people to your Site, that could be a real advantage.
