These three little words will continue to be important throughout all of your advertising ventures. It is an easy formula that works with not only radio, but also with print advertising, commercial, and other ad mediums. The name of this technique is the PAS solution.
The first thing that you need to do is start with the “P” which is the “problem.” You need to introduce the problem and use one that is common to the kind of people that you trying to target.
After you have made the problem apparent, you continue on the “A” or “Agitate.” You need to dramatize that problem and make it real to your readers.
You want to make them want your “solution,” which is what you will offer with “S.” Make them see that you have what they need to make the problem better.
Finally, you want to give them a “call to action” - give them a number to call, or an offer that will help them. Show them that it is easy for them to order, and tell them why it’s important that they order RIGHT NOW.

In San Diego near Pacific Beach, they used to have a general, small video rental store. Lo and behold, at the other end of the block here came Blockbuster Video that took over an old drug store that went out of business. I would now like to cover how to create a steady stream of profits month in and month out by just pointing out mistakes that other web site owners make. Let me give you an example. Last week I was looking for some software. I was looking at a site that offered some software that was somewhat pricey. The web site said that there were two ways to order their software. In “There are two ways,” there was spelled t-h-e-i-r instead of t-h-e-r-e. Being a poor speller myself, I just figured it was a typo. I kept on going and ignored that. A little while later, though, the site said, “There were so many...” and it was spelled t-h-e-i-r again. There were a couple other typos on the page, and even though I am willing to give someone a wide leeway on spelling, it made me pause. |

Did I buy the software? No. Why? I didn’t buy the software because the webmaster - a company representative - wasn’t a good speller. That destroyed that company’s credibility with me. The misspellings were seemingly stating that the company wasn’t paying attention to the details. If they didn’t care about the details, how much were they going to care about their customer service and their follow-up?
In programming, detail is so very important! Would their code be sloppy? Like they would in any other sales situation, these doubts made me pause. When I pause, like any buyer that pauses, very frequently you lose the sale. That’s exactly what happened here! I decided I would wait. In the end, though, I found the type of software I wanted somewhere else.
It may not be true that spelling and grammar are the most important things in the world, but when you are basing your whole impression of a company on what you see on the screen of the web site, it becomes very important. You can solve this problem for a lot of companies by offering a proofreading service for web masters. Everyone has a spell checker - we spell check everything that we put up. A spell checker won’t point out the difference between t-h-e-i-r and t-h-e-r-e, or d-e-a-r or d-e-e-r, though. The word is spelled correctly. It doesn’t check for the improper use of the word, it checks for the spelling of the word. |

Really obvious grammatical errors are very common on web sites. Believe me, from my own writing experience, if you’ve made a mistake on that screen or that page, you’ll tend to miss it over and over again when you go back and look at it. You’ll be too busy looking for content, not grammatical errors. You’ll see it correctly, because subconsciously you’re looking for the content and not for the errors.
You could do a great service for other web sites! You, your wife, or a high school or college student in your family could be really good at grammar. You don’t have to be the world’s greatest speller (a good spell checker will do), but you should be a good proofreader. A proofreader is someone who picks up on mistakes and grammatical goofs really easily.
You can put together a service very easily with a very low start-up, offering the proofreading service right over the web. You could call your company something along the lines of “yourslipisshowing.com” or “theproofisintherreading.com” or “proofit.com.” You get the idea. Something like that - a little catchy name. Then you put up a very simple web site. Make certain that you spell everything correctly! Then you can start soliciting other web sites to do their proofreading and catch mistakes for them. |

It is a very easy business to start. I would begin by running ads in other e-zines, which are easy to find. Simply look for e-zines or an e-zine that is targeted to web masters or marketing, because these are people who are marketing over the Internet or have web sites. You can use e-mail to solicit customers, and you can post on newsgroups that web masters and web marketers frequent.
The best way to price your service would probably be by the page. You could charge a certain amount per page for proofreading and checking a web site. While you are at it, you might also check to see that all their links are working. Anything that you can add in value to the site that says, “I caught a mistake,” “I caught something you overlooked,” “Here’s a bad link,” “Here’s a misspelled word,” “Here’s a grammatical error,” etc.
It can be very simple. They could send you their credit card number and the address that they want to use. We’re all very afraid of making mistakes on our e-zines, and we’re all very afraid that we will show our ignorance about common grammatical usage. Most writers are very insecure about their grammar. They didn’t like grammar in school any more than the rest of us! We can boil this down to two words - Collector Clubs.
If you take any item that people collect and value and they are buying, trading, and swapping, there are clubs in just about any size of community that support those collectors.
We have a friend who used to work in a pipe shop. He had, and still has, a very nice collection of smoking pipes, and he still occasionally enjoys them to this day. He was involved in several pipe clubs. They would buy, sell, swap, and trade pipes.
There’s a seemingly infinite number of collector clubs out there, all with some different product to serve as their obsession. Stamp collecting clubs, Beanie Baby clubs, action figure clubs, comic book clubs, Barbie doll clubs, book clubs . . . the list could be a large work itself, and would probably span a number of thousand page volumes. |

There are lots of different ways to do this, and all we can tell you is how we did it. It worked for us, so we think it can work great for you.
First of all, we took a stripped down online distributorship and gave it away free. Now, what we mean by stripped down is we had a product that was selling for $497 and that’s the version that we sold regardless on our web site. Whatever you are selling, you have a fixed price you’re selling that for.
We offered a free online distributorship or affiliate program and we paid people a small percentage of that. We only paid $75 per sale. We do have some costs involved in setting up the affiliate program, setting up the online distributorship, and getting it to recognize them as an affiliate, so we I charged a small processing fee of $20. You can charge whatever you want - $5, $10, $20.
You have to be careful when saying it is free. You don’t want to charge too high of a processing fee, but you can charge a processing fee to cover your fees of the cost of getting it on the Internet and getting it set up. |

Then once they’re signed up, the way you really make your money is by offering them a chance to upgrade to a more expensive option that then pays them more money for each sale.
We jumped them up from $75 all the way up to 50% commission, which was $248.75. So, we actually offered them the option of upgrading. They pay me more money - in my case it was $198 I charged them to upgrade. Then they made $250 per sale.
So what you can do then, by offering the free version, you bring a large number of web sites in who want to get this affiliate program on their web site. They pay you the processing fee, then you allow them to upgrade to the more expensive option that pays them more money per sale that is made.
You may be wondering why anybody would pay for an affiliate program when there are a lot of affiliate programs out there that are free, quite frankly. The reason that people will be willing to pay for an affiliate program like this is because you pay them more money. With most traditional affiliate programs you are going to make around 3% or 5%. It is a very small amount per sale. They can be great that way, but we recommend that, if you have the option of doing it, if you have a product that you can control, and you have a high profit margin on, go ahead and give away a large
percentage of the profit and people will be happy to pay for that because they realize that they can make a lot more money per sale that they make. |

So, first of all, have the cheap version that you give away free or, if you don’t even want to say free, you can charge a small fee. Then when you send them the information about the affiliate program and tell them they’re signed up, automatically give them an option of upgrading to the more expensive version where they make more money per sale.

Then you offer to give them a percentage of the money you make on the front end, or the free version. So, for example, if you’re charging a $20 processing fee for your free affiliate program, you can offer to split that with them so they get $10 per sale.
That’s going to be automatic money for them. They can simply either insert a flyer or report in their package that they send out or if it’s direct mail, or if they’re sending the product over the Internet, you can just talk about it if it’s e-mail. You can write it up in the email and do it that way.
Remember, the only real reason you’re giving away the free version, or the cheap version, is to get people to upgrade to the higher priced version. So you’re okay giving away a portion of the profit to whoever you work that joint venture with.
If you give away 50% of that $20 fee remember that is the free version or the low priced version. Your ultimate goal is to get people to upgrade and a large percentage of the people will upgrade when they see that they’ll be able to make a lot more money on each product that they sell for you through their web site.

You start tracking what questions your customers are asking most often and just take the time to create a list of the most frequently asked questions. This is a lot easier than it seems. This allows you to offer what is referred to on the Internet as a FAQ (frequently asked questions) list that you can generate and update frequently and make available to your customers in all of your letters or any correspondence on your web site, where they can just send and get a list of all questions that can be answered.

If you sell a book or manual, try putting the first chapter of that manual or the first chapter of that book on your Website. People read the Table of Contents (which is hopefully a great Table of Contents telling what all the Chapters have) then they read 1st Chapter and they’re interested in continuing. Then you put in the order instructions.
C-Span, the cable Network that covers politics and a lot of non-fiction topics, has been doing this for a long time. In fact, they have “Book TV” every weekend on thousands or hundreds of cable channels around the country.
We recently heard that many of their authors are selling all kinds of books because they get the 1st Chapter and then they say, “Go to Amazon.com or go to Barnes&Noble.com and you can buy the book.” I understand it’s working just like a Rolex. This is how you can get your book reviewed on cable television - FREE!
Now, if you have a manual you can do this. You can do it with a book. Let’s say you’re selling some CD-ROM or floppy disks and have all kinds of reports on it. Why not put 3 reports, 4 reports, 5 reports, and pick out good ones - GOOD ONES! Put them up there and then after you show those reports and they get to read them or download them then you say, “Now to get the whole package, here’s how to order.” |
