Secondly, you can reach smaller markets that are unprofitable for larger companies. We’ll never forget the story that Russ von Hoelscher tells about the time he was at a trade show of the American Booksellers Convention in Las Vegas and he ran into some executives from Prentice Hall.

That year they were both talking about the money that they had made that year – If memory serves correctly, Russ took home maybe $600,000 or $800,000 in pure net profit, and Prentice Hall lost $6 million that year. So here you’ve got this gigantic corporation that lost $6 million and Russ has got a small but extremely profitable company that did well over a half million dollars in pure net profits.

It also depends on the length of your contest. If you’re having a contest where you give away a thousand dollars a month, obviously in that month’s time you are going to have more traffic coming than if you advertise that the contest is weekly.

There is another twist on this - you could give away a thousand dollars a week, and if you had $250 per week coming in per sponsor, you could actually make that! Instead of $2,500 a month, you could be making that much every single week.

There are lots of options. Now, not only does it benefit you because of the cash, but there are also two other ways it benefits you. You are going to have a flood of people coming to your web site to that one web page to sign up. Not only do you want to have your sponsors’ banner ads or display ads, but you also want to put a big link to your main web site where you do sell your products.

They were interviewing him and asking him about technology and where the Internet was going. In particular, one thing he said struck us and really had us thinking. The person doing the interview asked him about all the branches and the things he was starting to do. They started off selling books. Now, they’re into videos and CD’s. They’re even starting to sell toys and other things, branching out more and more into many different markets.

The gentleman who was interviewing Mr. Bezzos said, “There are a lot of competitors rising up against you and trying to compete with you. You may be the biggest now, but how do you feel about all these competitors?”

Mr. Bezzos calmly replied, “Look, first of all, I firmly believe there’s plenty of room for everybody out there. There’s nothing I can do to stop the progress of the Internet and technology and how it all develops. There’s nothing I can do to stop people from competing. In fact, competition is good for everybody. I think there’s going to be plenty of money made and lots of success stories in the coming couple of years. We’ve always loved package inserts because, before the Internet came along, they were kind-of the similar appeal - you didn’t have postage (because they ride along in a package). You didn’t have to rent a mailing list (because, again, they ride along to somebody who’s already buying something else)! It’s just advertising that rides along in a package. They insert it in there before they tape the box shut.

If you order some fishing lures, you open the box and there’s an advertisement in there for a video on how to catch more trout!

Package inserts are a great way to advertise your Website. They’re how you can advertise your website address in hundreds or even thousands of special little tiny packages! Here you have a proven buyer! This is somebody who actually bought something. They’re not just some name on a list you hope is a buyer and you don’t have to hope they’re a recent buyer.

Sometimes certain things hit you, but for us that is one of the great truths that we’ve learned. So many people are sitting on their chairs waiting for an idea to come to them. We’re sorry, but it just doesn’t work that way. The best ideas come to you when you’re out there moving, and you’re making things happen, and you’re trying to figure things out - when you’re serving your customers and you’re trying to come up things.

It also tends to happen when you’re totally into one project and your head is just so absorbed in one project. That’s often when you get the idea for the next project - while you’re absorbed in a different project.

You Can Do To Eliminate

People are naturally procrastinators. You must get them over that hurdle and persuade them to order your product. These seven things can easily be done to help in that process. They are:

1. Have an introductory offer.
Let your prospects know that you are making a limited introductory offer that will not be repeated.

2. Make a limited time offer.
Set a specific date - ten days, 30 days, etc. - after which your product will go back to its original price.

3. Let them know your product is in limited supply.
If you only have a certain number of your product, be honest with your customers. Tell them that they must act now or they may be to late!

4. Offer a bonus for fast reply.
If the prospect responds by a certain date, they get a free bonus.

5. Let them know about your planned future price increase.
Use this only if you are really contemplating a price increase. Let your customers know that you are planning on increasing the price, but they can save money if they order now!

6. Use command copy.
All throughout your copy, use words like “order now,” “don’t delay,” “call now,” etc. These will subtly remind your customers to not procrastinate.

7. Use involvement devices.
Get the customer involved in the order process. You might say something like “check the box for rush delivery. We will send your order to you by fast priority mail!” This will get them excited about receiving your product quickly. You may also try “retain this stub for your records.” Anything you can do to get the customer involved is good!

These seven things will help your customer order without procrastinating. Try using some or all of them in your next sales promotion!
